Prominent witness torn down
by Hank Beymer
A prominent "landmark" witness to the Gospel is being torn down. Standing at the corner of Texas Avenue and Villa Maria in Bryan, Texas, a shaved ice business called Shivers has for many years prominently displayed on its buildings comments about the saving power of Jesus Christ. For many years, the message painted on the bright pink freezer at the rear of the main building read "No Jesus - No Peace. Know Jesus - Know Peace". The current message refers simply to the "certainties" of life, while playing on a well-known advertisement for the milk industry. "You Live - You Die - You Pay Taxes. Got Jesus?"
Located in the parking lot of the Manor East Mall, Shivers has been strategically placed at one of the busiest intersections in the Bryan-College Station area. Thousands of people each day drive by, and could hardly fail to notice the shocking pink building with the large black messages. Manor East Mall, undergoing a major renovation and face-lift, has been renamed Tejas Mall, and several cornerstone clients have been signed to long-term leases. Apparently, the little Shivers building didn't fit into the mall owners idea of "class".
Fortunately for the many customers of Shivers, they are moving to a Dominik Drive location in College Station. We wish them well in their new location, and hope they will continue to dispense with their tasty ice concoctions as well as the Gospel for a long time to come.
