A Different Kind of Witness

Ed. note: one of our readers was passing through Ocean Beach, Maryland, recently, and watched a man sculpt some magnificent art in the sand. After taking the pictures, he sent these to us, along with the story of Randy Hofman.

Randy Hofman is considered to be the king of Christian sand sculptors. For the past 20 plus years he has created Biblical scenes in bas relief in the sand. Working on the beach outside the Plim Plaza Hotel at Ocean Beach, Maryland on a daily basis, Randy creates the scenes and witnesses to the thousands who stop to watch. In the summertime, Randy is often able to create 3 or 4 sculptures a day, and they sometimes last as long as a week. After finishing the work, he treats them with a biodegradable spray that helps protect them from the wind and moisture. A nearby business, The Ocean Gallery, provides Randy with water for sculpting and electricity for lighting. Randy estimates that he has passed out more than 800,000 tracts over the years.

In late July of each year, Jesus At The Beach Music & Ministry Festival offers three days of "praise, worship, dance, drama, testimony, preaching, prayer, and Holy Spirit ministry" including public baptisms. The ministry formed as an offshoot of Randy's work. Many Christian ministries make the beach their mission field, with Spring Break a particularly great time.
